The brief

Kettle & Kiln is a café inside a working ceramics studio on Dundas West. The owners wanted the brand to feel handmade without looking homemade.

Design direction

The main mark is a round stamp that the potters press into the base of every cup. A soft serif wordmark and a monospace for small text sit beside it, with four colours taken from the studio’s own glazes.

Production

Business cards and letterheads are letterpress-printed on cotton stock; coffee bags use a single-colour sticker so short runs stay cheap. Menus are printed on the café’s own laser printer from a simple template.

Output

One stamp

The same mark on cups, bags, cards and menus, in clay and in ink.

Studio note

If it works pressed into clay, it works everywhere.
